Hi there, delighted to see the article on KEE on your site and also my article on Wilson and Daramona (even though without permission!) As an historian of astronomy I would very much like to have better images of the Aldershot Observatory and in particular the restored Grubb telescope. David restored all the instruments at Armagh and did a great job, I’m sure this is also true of Aldershot. Perhaps someone would be kind enough to contact me privately regarding this matter. Thanks in advance.
John.
I had tried my best to present something based on info from a few sources and to not plagurise (though it is sometimes difficult to write something that appears to be original when you distil things down to so few sentences); I did make a point of acknowledging my sources including your excellent article on the website as an information source in the hope that interested parties might follow it. I hope no offence was taken and will make changes to the article if you wish.
I would be delighted to obtain some better photos of the Aldershot observatory for you. I have a few already which are taken with a small digital camera.
It gave me a thrill to find that David remained as a link to the origins of these wonderful telescopes. Unfortunately the Aldershot Observatory runs the risk of becoming an athetic feature on a roundabout in a proposed development of the surrounding barracks.
I have tried to research the KEE connection – why did the Army end up with a Grubb telescope? With a mind in overdrive you could perhaps understand KEE being a catalyst – assuming he was in and around Aldershot at the time. I have tracked down the Aldershot News article for the opening ceremony in 1906 – more senior officers are named but not KEE. If he was there he was possibly not of sufficient rank to get a mention! But what an incredible career.
I have sent an email directly with my contact details.
